Jim Goodwin urges St Mirren to repeat cup heroics

The Paisley outfit finally picked up their first Scottish Premiership victory of the season with Friday night’s dramatic 2-1 win over Partick and return to Firhill on Tuesday on League Cup duty.

Goodwin was skipper when former boss Danny Lennon led the club all the way to the 2013 final and had the proud honour of lifting the trophy after their Hampden win over Hearts.

Now he has urged Tommy Craig’s side - still living off the high of Kenny McLean’s last-gasp spot-kick winner against the Jags - to use the lure of another cup run as motivation to see off Thistle again.

The Irishman said ahead of the third-round clash: “The League Cup is a great competition for clubs like ourselves. For the so-called smaller clubs in this country, it offers a hell of an opportunity to win some silverware.

“That’s the message we have been trying to put through to the boys.

“Some of the lads who have been here a while experienced that great day we had 18 months ago.

“But for the new boys, especially the ones who have come up from down south, we have been trying to drum into them that it is a great chance to ensure they end their career with a medal.

“That is the biggest incentive that we can give them.

“Partick will be a really difficult test, just as it was on Friday. I don’t expect them to change much. They have a small squad like ourselves, so both sides will know what to expect.

“We didn’t do too well in the first half but came out much better and managed to get the win. A repeat of that would be great.”
