The Alloa boss, speaking on Thursday afternoon, said “I am extremely proud.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, to be honest. It was something in which came out of the blue.

“I feel I am still young and you usually only hear about these things happening to guys in their 50s or 60s, so, I am very privileged and proud – my family are absolutely delighted that I have been chosen.

“We had great success in that team in 2013 that won the League Cup – it was a great occasion for everyone who was involved: the club, the fanbase, the team, the players...everybody.

“It was a great day out, especially as it was such a long time since the club had won a major trophy before that, so, I think that made it even more special.

“For me to be the captain, it was an absolute privilege at the time.

I am extremely grateful and honoured to have been chosen and I am looking forward to the dinner on the 6th of October.”

“I hope to see other members of the squad who were there that day, as hopefully one or two more of them – and even Danny Lennon – will get an induction too at some point.

“I spent six years there, it is the longest I have ever spent at a club and when you are there for that length of time, you build up a relationship with people behind the scenes as well as the fans so it is good to know that they appreciated my effort for the team and that they recognised my commitment for the cause. Every time I put the shirt on for the team I gave 100 per cent.”

Goodwin now hopes the Buddies can flourish under Jack Ross this season and get back up to the Scottish Premiership.

“It is a result I always look out for. I have a lot of time for Jack and the things he has done since he took over last season.

“They have sold 2,500 season tickets, which is incredible. It is a massive club and it is one that is in a good position now with a good manager in place.

“I really hope they go on this season and do well as everyone at the club deserves it. They are a Premiership club and that is where they should be.”
