Why the first Scottish Cup weekend of the year - normally so eagerly awaited - must be regarded with mixed feelings

The first Scottish Cup weekend of the year is normally something to be relished. This year, sadly, it must be regarded with mixed feelings.

Even though there are several fascinating ties to contemplate, the question is, should they even be happening (weather permitting)? One would suggest not. East Fife v Tranent Juniors, Buckie Thistle v Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Dundee v Bonnyrigg Rose, the last of which is being covered live on BBC Scotland.

All contain the poetic properties that makes the Scottish Cup so alluring while offering the hint of a potential shock. Some also involve full-time pros mixing with amateurs and semi-professionals, meaning the loose bubbles in which these players have been operating in to date this season will become looser still.

I get that the SFA, just weeks after finally wrapping up the 2019/20 edition, are loath to start postponing this season’s tournament. However, their priority should be the health of players.
