The freak occurrence came during the Fife side’s 6-2 win over Craigroyston on Saturday in the East of Scotland First Division conference A.

Garry Thomson, and Garry Thomson, were both on target three times each at St Mark’s Park and what’s more the duo even combined to lay on the other’s second goal to register an assist each too during the rout which lifted the Hibs into fifth in the table.

Had fans been allowed to attend the match, the unique circumstances would surely have called for a reprisal of the terrace chant, ‘there’s only one Garry Thomson’ – but dedicated to which of the two goalscorers?

Once the Thomson two sent Craig Gilbert’s visitors 6-0 ahead the home side pulled consolations back in the closing stages says the match report in our sister title, Fife Today.

And, predictably, the pair could not be separated by the selectors of the man of the match award, so the prize was shared by both Garry Thomson and Garry Thomson for their respective trebles.

While hat-tricks for the same named players is unique – same-named players at clubs are not so unusual.

Among the best-known examples, former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele briefly shared a dressing room with midfielder Moussa Dembele at Fulham, while in the 1990s Coventry City had two Paul Williams on their books.

Just last year Queen’s Park Rangers sold Matt Smith to Millwall, before signing another player of the same name, on the same day, from Manchester City.
