Davidson, who was brought through the club’s academy and sold for a record £1.75million fee to Blackburn Rovers, was most recently assistant manager to Gary Rowett at Millwall.

After more than a decade playing in England with Blackburn, Preston North End and Leicester City, he returned to finish his career at McDiarmid Park before moving into a coaching role.

Davidson acted as Wright’s assistant between 2013 and 2018, helping the club win the 2014 Scottish Cup, before joining Rowett at Stoke City. He had a brief spell with Dunfermline Athletic as coach before moving back down south to Millwall.

He has already started work at St Johnstone as manager with the players returning on Monday for testing.

Alec Cleland is expected to assist Davidson with Steven MacLean set to be appointed as first-team coach.
