Steve Clarke’s former assistant, who assumed control of the first team at Rugby Park for 13 months after the ill-fated reign of Angelo Alessio, released a statement thanking fans, and the Ayrshire club, through the League Managers’ Association.

Dyer described his honour at working in Scottish football and privilege of working with the Kilmarnock players – who host reigning league champions Celtic with an interim management trio in charge.

The search for a new manager began on Saturday evening after parting company with the Londoner ‘by mutual consent’. His final match in the dugout saw St Johnstone overturn a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 at Rugby Park which sent Kilmarnock to ninth in the Scottish Premiership table.

But Dyer has thanked those associated with the club ahead of the match with Celtic and says he’s ready for his next step after being given his first.

He said: “I would like to thank Kilmarnock Football Club for the opportunity to take my first steps in professional management. It has been an honour for me to manage in the SPL, and I have no doubt that this experience will have a lasting impact on my future career.

“Thank you to the players who I had the privilege of working with. Your constant hard work in training and the high standards you set as a team will serve you and the club well moving forward. I would also like to thank the staff and board for everything they did in support of me in this role.

“Finally, I would like to thank the fans for the loyalty they have shown to the team. The passion they show for the team to be successful is clear and I truly wish you all the success in the future.

“I am excited to take on a new challenge and look forward to my next opportunity.”

James Fowler, Andy Millen and club captain Gary Dicker have taken over temporary first-team duties.
