Durrant, 49, is in charge of the Ibrox under-20 side having previously been No 2 to former manager Ally McCoist.

But the lifelong Rangers fan looks to have been squeezed out in a revamp of the coaching staff under current boss Mark Warburton, according to reports on STV.

Durrant was an outstanding midfield player with Rangers during the 1980s and 1990s, helping the club dominate the domestic scene. His career was interrupted by a serious knee injury in 1988 but he fought back to play a role as Rangers won nine titles in a row between 1989 and 1997.

He finished his playing career with Kilmarnock but returned to Ibrox in 2005 under Alex McLeish before acting as caretaker boss following Paul Le Guen’s departure in 2007.

He had a key role in McCoist’s coaching team but was demoted to under-20s coach following his ex-team-mate’s departure in December 2014.
