Highland League: Allan fires out a warning to the big boys

David Allan believes the Highland League’s powerbase is shifting – with far north clubs set to have a huge say in the title destination.

The Wick Academy striker’s winning goal sank 2009/10 and 2010/11 champions Buckie Thistle to send out a warning to the league’s established order.

The Wick frontman said: “Gone are the days when the so-called bigger teams could just turn up at these places and expect the points. I would say the north teams can have a big say in where the title goes.”

The Jags were dominant at first with Zander Sutherland opening the scoring from the spot in the 24th minute after Grant Steven pulled down Shawn Scott

But Wick were the stronger side thereafter and their Polish cult hero Lukasz Geruzel equalised with a rocket shot. Allan then emerged as the home hero with a low, powerful blast into the corner of the net from 20 yards after 74 minutes to seal the win.
