We need to be ruthless all the time, angry Hibs boss Jack Ross tells his players

The Leith side knew a win would take them back above Celtic, into second place, but, despite countless opportunities to build on their 12th minute lead, they were left to rue the absence of a clinical edge as their guests stung them with a last gasp equaliser.

“We should win the game with the amount of chances we’ve created throughout the match. It’s probably the angriest I have been with the players this season. I want them making sure they get what they deserve from football matches because they deserved to win that.”

The performance of United keeper Benjamin Siergrist helped keep them at bay but the frustrated Hibs boss knows his team should still have had enough to guarantee the win.

“At half-time I don’t think I can be critical of the finishing because I think Siegrist’s saves were outstanding, really, really top saves. In the second half it flips a bit, I don’t think he makes brilliant saves - I think we miss opportunities.

“It’s not like us because generally we are ruthless and I can’t criticise the way we played for the vast majority of that game and the amount of chances we created but those missed opportunities came back to haunt us. They gave the opposition something to cling on to in terms of getting back into the match.”

Competing at the top end of the league, he said his players learned a valuable lesson is just how high standards have to be each and every game if they want to achieve their objective.

“I’ve got a brilliant group and they have been great for me this season and the progress they have made has been really good.

“We’ve got such high standards but to push towards where we want to get to we’ve got to be ruthless all the time.

We’ve made good progress in that respect and have been ruthless in both boxes but it’s a reminder of the importance of continuing to do so.

“The way the game finished is sore for us but we’ll dust ourselves down and go again [against St Mirren] on Wednesday.”
