Sky Sports reported late on Thursday that the 25-year-old, who joined Aberdeen on loan from Swiss side St Gallen on transfer deadline day last month, had been sent a message on Instagram which read: “A cant wait for the day u die [sic].”

The social media giant, which has removed the comment, confirmed to the broadcaster that it was looking into the abuse while the Easter Road side also launched an investigation of their own to establish if the perpetrator held a season ticket for Hibs.

A spokesperson for the club told the Evening News: “We condemn any and all abusive posts directed at footballers or others in the public eye.

"It is completely unacceptable. This individual is not on our database but we will look to see what action is open to us.”

During a pre-match press conference to preview Aberdeen’s Scottish Premiership meeting with Kilmarnock at the weekend Dons assistant boss Tony Docherty, branding the abuse "totally unacceptable at every level", insisted that all at Pittodrie would rally round the Swiss-born striker.

"Knowing Flo and the kind of character he is, I don't think it will affect him," Docherty said. “I don't know the exact ins and outs of it but he's got a strong personality and we'll get round him because he's our player.

"Since he's been in the building we've been really impressed with him; not just with his footballing ability, but with his personality and enthusiasm as well.

"It's just totally unacceptable.”

Kamberi, who played for the Easter Road side between 2018 and 2020 before a short loan spell at Rangers, is not the first Scottish Premiership player to be subjected to serious abuse on social media.

Former Ibrox goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, and current Gers first-team players Connor Goldson, Alfredo Morelos, and James Tavernier have all been racially abused while Celtic's Nir Bitton was also targeted by supporters of his own team for “being Israeli”.

Wycombe Wanderers forward Uche Ikpeazu also recently revealed that he was the victim of racial abuse during his spell with Hearts.
