West Brom chase Commons for £7m

WEST Brom have been linked with a £7 million move for Celtic star Kris Commons.

The former Derby midfielder had an outstanding season last year, scoring 32 goals and picking up a raft of awards.

But West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine could test Celtic’s resolve with a hefty bid as he looks to supplement his Hawthorns squad.

Commons was also voted one of the top 25 players in Europe in a recent poll. (The Mirror)

Brown backs Deila despite McAvennie outburst

CELTIC captain Scott Brown has thrown his full support behind manager Ronny Deila, after former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie launched an astonishing attack on the club.

McAvennie claimed no one had ever heard of the Norwegian, adding: “I hope he is not the puppet some people say he is but I fear he might be.”

He also hit out at Celtic’s use of Murrayfield for their Champions League qualifiers, and questioned the decision to play new signing Jo Inge Berget just a day after his arrival from Cardiff.

But Brown backed his manager, insisting: “It’s outrageous how good he’s been.

“He’s focused on football, how we can attack people’s weaknesses, he’s always watching videos and other teams’ videos.”

“If you ask any of the players in the Celtic dressing room every single of them enjoyed pre-season,” Brown added. (The Scotsman)

Mohsni misses Hibs, Hearts clashes

BILEL Mohsni was yesterday ruled out of Rangers’ matches with Hibernian in the Petrofac Training Cup, and Hearts on league duty following his silly sending-off against Derby County.

The Tunisian centre half was red carded for an alleged ‘diving head-butt’ on Rams striker Chris Martin in the pre-season friendly, earning himself a straight red his third dismissal as a Rangers player.

But Ally McCoist revealed he is not looking to sell the defender, despite two reported bids from Abu Dhabi outfit Baniyas. (The Scotsman)

McGregor braced for ‘boyhood heroes’ clash

RANGERS defender Darren McGregor will put his support for Hibs to the back of his mind as he aims to get the Ibrox side off to a winning start.

The ex-St Mirren centre half idolised fellow defender Franck Sauzee as a boy, and also had a soft spot for eventual Rangers midfielder Russell Latapy.

But McGregor said: “I hope [Hibs] do well, but now that we are in the same division this season, I obviously hope Rangers beat them.

“It’s a massive game for us as it will set a benchmark for the season if we can perform well. If we can beat Hibs and then win again in the opening league game against Hearts on Sunday, it could set down a good marker for the season.” (Various)

HIBS boss Alan Stubbs has revealed the postponement of his side’s Petrofac Training Cup tie with Rangers has been a huge benefit.

Stubbs inherited a depleted Hibs side after relegation and has faced a race against time to bring in new signings and get his squad ready.

But the ex-Celtic defender feels his team are in a good place after the enforced delay. (Various)
