Maurice Malpas coy on his and Butcher’s future

Terry Butcher kept a low profile at Easter Road yesterday as he watched Hibernian lose 2-0 to Inverness Caledonian Thistle ahead of his expected move from the Highlands to the Edinburgh club. Butcher, who is expected to be appointed Hibs manager this week, sat incognito in the stand as assistant Maurice Malpas took charge of Inverness.

Malpas later said that his own situation remained up in the air. “People are assuming I’m involved in this. I’m not involved in this at all,” Malpas said. “Terry has spoken to Hibs, Hibs are speaking to our club. Maurice Malpas has never been mentioned.

“I would expect, when Terry makes his mind up, that I will get involved some way, whether that’s ‘You’re not coming’ or ‘Do you want to come?’ or whatever. The two clubs are obviously talking about compensation. Until that bit gets decided, I don’t have a decision to make.”

Asked if it was conceivable that he and Butcher could go their separate ways, Malpas said: “It’s a possibility.” Asked whether he fancied the Inverness job himself, he added: “Possibly.”
