Hibs: Cup final timeline

Since winning the Scottish Cup in 1902 Hibs have lost eight finals.

» 1914 Celtic 4 Hibs 1

Hibs were outclassed, losing two early goals to Jimmy McColl in the sixth and 11th minutes. John Browning added another before the break and his second in the 60th minute. William Smith reduced the deficit five minutes later but was it not for a couple of fine saves by the Hibs goalkeeper, the final score could have been more humiliating.

» 1923 Celtic 1 Hibs 0

Neither team played to their full potential and, in the end, Celtic edged it by one goal, the correct outcome on the run of play. After a goalless first half, Hibs started the second half brightly but could not conjure up a goal and were punished in the 65th minute when a cross from John McFarlane lured Hibs goalie Bill Harper off his line and the incoming Joe Cassidy ducked to head the ball into the open net.

» 1924 Airdrieonians 2 Hibs 0

Hibs conceded the first of the goals just two minutes into the game and never recovered. Thanks to a listless first-half performance they were 2-0 down by half-time, the first coming from the head of William Russell. The same player added a second headed goal just two minutes before the interval.

» 1947 Aberdeen 2 Hibs 1

Hibs got the opening goal in the first 30 seconds after Aberdeen’s keeper fumbled a back pass and John Cuthbertson had an easy tap in. But while Hibs lacked an on-field leader, Aberdeen showed grit and character and their equaliser came in the 35th minute from a George Hamilton header. Seven minutes later Stan Williams’ goal gave Aberdeen their first Scottish Cup final win.

» 1958 Clyde 1 Hibs 0

The 13th-minute injury to playmaker Andy Aitken hit Hibs hard and they were stalled by a stuffy and defensive Clyde side. Having got the only goal of the game, courtesy of John Coyle, in the 30th minute, the normally attack-minded Clyde then set about offering aggressive and resolute resistance.

» 1972 Celtic 6 Hibs 1

The play was not as one-sided as the scoreline would suggest but, in the end, Hibs were well beaten. Although troubled by the jinking of Jimmy Johnstone, and traumatised by a side with so many attacking options, it was ultimately Dixie Deans, who inflicted the greatest pain on Hibs, scoring a hat-trick. Billy McNeill had opened the scoring, heading home a free-kick, while Lou Macari grabbed two goals to complete the rout. Hibs’ only response was from Alan Gordon.

» 1979 Rangers 3 Hibs 2

After goalless draws in the initial match and the first replay, Rangers won the second replay 3-2 after extra time. It was all the more agonising for Hibs defender Arthur Duncan, right, whose 110th-minute own goal gave the Glasgow side victory. Tony Higgins and Ally McLeod had both scored for Hibs, cancelling out Derek Johnstone’s double but the unfortunate Duncan was to find his way into the history books as the only Hibs player to have scored a winning goal in a final of that competition since 1902.

» 2001 Celtic 3 Hibs 0

Hibs went into this match without their talismanic trickster Russell Latapy after his off-field dalliances incurred the wrath of manager Alex McLeish. Without him they were never close to being a match for a Celtic side which was just too strong for them in every department. Hibs were only 1-0 down to a Jackie MacNamara goal at half-time but, after it, they could not contain Henrik Larsson, who struck twice.
