Changing Room Chat: Final countdown: Capital heroes No 2 - Dave Mackay

IF yesterday’s hero, Gordon Smith, straddled the capital divide, then today’s is very much maroon to the core.

Dave Mackay was born in Edinburgh in 1934 and joined the club he supported as a boy. He went on to win all three domestic honours with the club during a six-year spell at Tynecastle. This included, captaining the side that won the 1957-58 championship with a British record of 132 goals for, 29 against. Two years earlier he had been in the side that won the Scottish Cup by beating Celtic 3-1 in the Gorgie club’s first final appearance since 1907. He also won League Cup winner’s medals in 1955 and 1959.

McKay went on to become a legend with Spurs, winning the first-ever English double in 1961, two more FA Cups in 1962 and 1967 and was in the first British side to lift a European trophy in 1963. McKay almost returned to Hearts but was convinced by Brian Clough to join Derby, where his career enjoyed an Indian summer. He won 22 Scotland caps.
