Ben Williams wins Hibs Supporters Player of Year

The Easter Road hitman had been widely expected to pick up the prize at the Supporters’ Association annual dinner,  having scored 22 goals so far this season, but it was goalkeeper Williams, who has saved five penalties in an impressive first season with Hibs, who swayed the fans’ vote. Griffiths picked up the Young Player of the Year award.

He said: “It is goals at the end of the day which win games, goalkeepers can’t go out there and score, we can only make saves, and when you have someone like Leigh in the form he is in you would expect him to win the award.

“Usually us goalkeepers are only on the back pages when we’ve made a mistake, but for me to be voted Player of the Year by the fans in my first season with Hibs is really something. I’m sure a few people were surprised – I was myself – but it’s a real honour.”

Paul Cairney won the fans’ vote for the most memorable moment of the season for his solo effort against Celtic in  September as Hibs twice fought back to force a 2-2 draw.

Meanwhile, Hibs midfielder Jorge Claros was an unused sub for Honduras as they drew 2-2 in their World Cup qualifier with Mexico. The Hibees’ other man on international duty, Northern Ireland’s Ryan McGivern, was denied the chance to win his 20th cap for his country when Russia’s clash with the Northern Irish in Belfast was postponed due to snow.
