Holden has been appointed as the club’s new assistant coach and has been joined in the Easter Road set-up by former St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Dundee United goalkeeper Alan Combe, who will act as player-coach after spending last season across the city at rivals Hearts. Both have been on Stubbs’ staff for the last two friendlies, against Berwick Rangers and Dunfermline, but were formally announced as new recruits yesterday.

The club also confirmed the arrival of John Porteous from Motherwell as head physiotherapist and that of strength and conditioning coach Paul Green, formerly of Falkirk. With Stubbs already being assisted by recently-appointed first-team coach John Doolan, the addition of Holden has thrilled the ex-Celtic defender.

Stubbs commented: “I’m really pleased to be able to bring Andy on board.

“Everybody in the football
department will be able to tap into his immense knowledge, which was gained by working alongside excellent managers such as David Moyes and Walter Smith.”
