Gordon adamant Accies play-off push is not over

The Championship club now face a daunting task to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the second leg. Gordon, however, believes Hibs are still “there for the taking” on Sunday. “What makes me think we can still win the tie?” he asked. “We don’t fear Hibs and I think the first leg showed that. We don’t have to be scared of them at Easter Road. We’re just as good a team as them. In fact, we feel we’re better.

“So we’ll go there with everything to gain and we’ll give it our all. I don’t think there’s a big gap between the bottom of the Premiership and top of the Championship. You could see that on Wednesday. The gulf in class was minimal but Hibs were cute in the way they went about their business and they took their two chances in the final third.

“But they’ll have a bit more pressure on them in front of their own fans and, if we score early, I think they’re there for the taking.”

The 21-year-old admits Hamilton are struggling with fatigue ahead of their fourth game in 13 days, while Terry Butcher’s men enjoyed an 11-day break after their final Premiership game before they entered the play-offs. “I could hardly walk coming off the park on Wednesday night,” Gordon added. “It wasn’t due to injury, I was just shattered.

“We’ll never use it as an excuse but we had three games in a week between the two Falkirk matches then the first leg against Hibs. I think that told on Wednesday because the boys have run themselves into the ground in these play-off games after a tough season.

“All the Hamilton boys did themselves proud. We gave absolutely everything. This tie isn’t over yet, no chance. I’m just gutted at the first-leg result. For their second goal, I tried to clear Cummings’ shot but I knew it was in. I was just hoping the referee didn’t see it!

“I thought we played some terrific stuff but goals change games and we didn’t take our chances. It’s frustrating because we’re a team renowned for our goalscoring. We scored 10 against Morton out of 11 chances on the last day of the season.

“We were so clinical that day. But, on Wednesday, we just couldn’t find that final pass or shot to break the deadlock. We hope to rectify that on Sunday.”
