Heriot-Watt savour title delight after Peebles stroll

Heriot-Watt University were crowned as the East Seniors Central Taxis First Division champions last night when they won 3-0 at Riccarton against a Peebles Rovers team who struggled to muster a goal threat.

The students, relegated at the end of last season, have proved to be deserving champions and their record of nine wins and one draw from their previous ten games is testimony to their overall superiority.

“That was a very convincing win and I thought we were very much in command,” said the University head coach, Michael Renwick.

“We not only won the game but also gave an impressive performance which was also important. On top of that we missed several other chances to increase our winning margin. Our back four and our goalkeeper were never really troubled as anything Peebles did attempt was from long distance.

“They came to make things difficult for us and rightly so, as far as they were concerned.”

Peebles started brightly but fell behind after 23 minutes when Sean Muhsin netted from ten yards after a goalmouth scramble.

Daniel Spiller fired the students further ahead five minutes before half-time when he latched on to a through pass from Muhsin.

Peebles contained the students in the second half until the dying seconds when Erik Thomson ran through to slip the ball past John Nesbit and secure the title for Heriot-Watt University.
