Robbie Neilson is as sympathetic a new manager as Peter Haring could hope for as he bids to relaunch his Hearts career following a year out with injury, writes Alan Pattullo.

Neilson himself suffered from a similar type of groin ailment that has derailed Haring’s career following such a promising first season at Hearts.

The returning Tynecastle manager has made keeping in contact with Haring one of his top priorities since his appointment last month. He is certain the midfielder, who went under the knife last month after the operation was originally postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, will be back for the first league game of the season.

The news will lift Hearts fans who feared Haring, who suffered a relapse after rushing back for the 2019 Scottish Cup final defeat by Celtic, might not play again.

As it stands, Hearts’ demotion at least gives Haring extra time to be ready since the Championship does not kick off until 17 October. The influential midfielder is currently rehabilitating in his native Austria.

“I have spoken to Peter a few times,” reported Neilson. “I think he would be a top player for us if we could get him fit and keep him fit.

“He had an operation three or four weeks ago and is rehabbing from that. We expect to have him back with us at the start of pre-season. Not full contact with the team but with a view to getting him back definitely for the first game of the season. It’s a similar problem to one I had and we have had a good chat about it,” added Neilson.

“It is very difficult to get to the bottom of it but he is having really good rehab over in Austria. He will get the same when he comes back here and we will just have try and manage it.

“Fingers crossed he is over it because in my opinion he is a very good player and would be a huge asset to us. Ultimately it’s about getting him pain free and back playing. I really hope for our sake, and his, that he is like that when he comes back.”
