Scottish Cup: Hearts need spirit of 1998 says Colin Cameron

COLIN Cameron has urged the current Hearts squad to summon the spirit of 1998 and do their part to set up the biggest Edinburgh derby of the modern age.

Cowdenbeath manager Cameron was in the Hearts side which lifted the Scottish Cup 14 years ago, scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot as the Tynecastle club recorded an unlikely win over Rangers at Parkhead. His strike was allied with a fine low Stephane Adam drive as Hearts put Rangers to the sword in a 2-1 triumph, despite the Ibrox side featuring nine-in-a-row captain Richard Gough, eventual World Cup winner Rino Gattuso and all-time record goalscorer Ally McCoist.

The 39-year-old believes the win was largely down to the belief and team spirit fostered by manager Jim Jefferies, who – despite several overseas imports – created a close-knit unit at Tynecastle.

Cameron reckons Paulo Sergio will have to rely on a similar togetherness from his own United Nations at Hearts, as the Gorgie side look to pull off a shock in Sunday’s semi-final against Celtic and reach May’s showpiece.
