The Edinburgh club had been monitoring the former Celtic player as he trained with the first-team squad over the past week.

However, the recent signing of Adam Eckersley, along with Callum Paterson’s return to training following a knee-injury, convinced head coach Robbie Neilson that they wouldn’t be requiring the 22-year old’s services.

Toshney was released by Celtic during the summer having made only one first team appearance over his Parkhead career.

He also had loan spells with Kilmarnock and Dundee in recent years.

One player who is close to finding new employment is former Hibs midfielder Owain Tudur Jones.

The Welshman was released by Alan Stubbs on Monday after appearing only once under the new manager this season.

He is now expected to sign with fellow Championship club Falkirk, following in the footsteps of Tom Taiwo, who made the same switch during the summer.
