Hearts derby classics No. 5: Wayne wins it in style

DESPITE Hibs dominating this Scottish Cup fourth-round match, it was Hearts who left Easter Road victorious.

The teams were level at half-time after, who else, John Robertson had put the visitors in front only for Keith Wright to equalise three minutes prior to the interval.

It was then left for the Wayne Foster show to begin.

A looping pass from Gary Mackay sent the English striker through. With two Hibs defenders closing him down, Foster managed to compose himself before firing a shot through Jim Leighton’s legs, sending the Hearts fans behind the goal into sheer ecstasy. It extended Hearts’ unbeaten run over Hibs to 21 games – and it was the Foster’s 21st goal for the club, his last goal coming almost three years previously, but the 30-year-old’s left-foot strike was well worth the wait. He said: “All I can remember is thinking that I had to keep the shot low, and, when it went past Jim Leighton, the next thing I remember is standing on the fence being mobbed by fans. It’s definitely the most important goal of my career and the first one I’ve ever scored against Hibs.”
