Paterson insisted on having a sell-on clause – understood to be 15 per cent – inserted in the deal which took him from Tynecastle Park to Cardiff in 2017.

He wanted to repay Hearts for bringing him through their youth academy and turning him into a full internationalist.

After three seasons with Cardiff, the 25-year-old now begins the next chapter of his career in Yorkshire. He is also in the Scotland squad for upcoming Euro 2020 play-off and Nations League ties.

Paterson is expected to occupy an attacking role for Wednesday after playing for Cardiff in various positions, including No.10 and centre-forward.

He emerged as a right-back at Hearts but has been utilised further forward in the English Championship.
