Hearts v Hibs in Scottish Cup: the complete post-war record

HEARTS and Hibernian have met ten times in the Scottish Cup since the war, with the Tynecastle side winning six times and Hibs four.

1954-55: Hearts 5 Hibernian 0

Hearts’ Terrible Trio forward line were in their pomp and tore Hibs apart. Doubles by Willie Bauld, right, and Jimmy Wardhaugh and a goal from Alfie Conn settled the match in front of 45,000 fans at Tynecastle.

1957-58: Hearts 3 Hibernian 4

Joe Baker dominated this third-round tie, scoring all four Hibs goals in a superlative display. Hearts responded through Johnny Hamilton, Wardhaugh and Jimmy Murray but were no match for the fabulous Baker boy, below. The Tynecastle side did go on to win the league in record-breaking fashion, however.

1965-66: Hearts 2 Hibernian 1

Hearts trailed 1-0 at half-time to a John McNamee goal but came back strongly in the second half to win this second-round match. Tommy Traynor and Billy Higgins were the scorers for Tommy Walker’s side.

1970-71: Hearts 1 Hibernian 2

Hibs proved too strong in this second-round tie at Tynecastle. John Hazel opened the scoring for the visitors and Kevin Hegarty equalised for Hearts but Arthur Duncan, right, struck the winner with ten minutes remaining.

1978-79: Hibernian 2 Hearts 1

A quarter-final at Easter Road saw Hibs manager Eddie Turnbull mastermind a win over his old Famous Five team-mate Willie Ormond, who was in charge of Hearts at the time. Hibs led 2-0 through goals from former Jambo Ralph Callachan and Gordon Rae before Derek O’Connor pulled one back. It was one of three Edinburgh derbies played in the space of 18 days due to postponements.

1993-94: Hibernian 1 Hearts 2

Wayne Foster’s dramatic late intervention sealed a famous fourth-round win for Hearts in a match that looked to be heading for a replay. John Robertson’s early opener had been cancelled out by Keith Wright’s equaliser but Foster was to have the last word. He latched on to a fine through ball from Gary Mackay, sprinted clear and finished calmly past Jim Leighton, sparking scenes of bedlam in the away end.

2005-06: Hearts 4 Hibernian 0

A Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden which saw Hearts rise to the occasion against a Hibs side hampered by the absence of Scott Brown and Derek Riordan. It was to be Paul Hartley’s game, the midfielder, left, scoring a hat-trick. Edgaras Jankauskas also scored for Hearts in a game notable for some eccentric goalkeeping from Zibby Malkowski and red cards for Hibs pair Gary Smith and Ivan Sproule.

2008-09: Hibernian 0 Hearts 2

Christian Nade and teenager Gary Glen were the heroes for Csaba Laszlo’s Hearts in a fourth-round victory. Steven Fletcher of Hibs was sent off for a foul on Christophe Berra which saw the Easter Road manager accuse the Hearts defender of “leaping like a brown trout” to win the free kick.

2011-12: Hibernian 1 Hearts 5

Billed as the biggest Edinburgh derby ever, Hearts pulverised their greatest rivals in the final at Hampden as Hibs fell apart following the sending off of Pa Kujabi. Darren Barr opened the scoring for Hearts and Rudi Skacel, above, doubled the lead before James McPake pulled one back for Hibs before half-time. Any suggestion that Hibs could make a game of it was killed off when Hearts scored a quick-fire double through a Danny Grainger penalty and a goal from Ryan McGowan. Skacel completed the scoring and Hibs manager Pat Fenlon was sent to the stand for gesticulating to the Hearts fans.

2012-13: Hibernian 1 Hearts 0

Hibs exacted a measure of revenge just over six months later when the sides were paired again in the competition. David Wotherspoon’s late deflected strike, below, won the game for Fenlon’s side who 
would go on to reach the final again that season, losing 
to Celtic.
