Gillet says Caley can recover from Motherwell blow

Inverness defender Kenny Gillet insists there is no way the players will let their heads go down as they struggle to get off the bottom of the SPL.

Caley Thistle looked destined to leapfrog Dunfermline last Saturday when Graeme Shinnie put them 2-1 ahead against Motherwell with 14 minutes remaining. But Keith Lasley struck a spectacular equaliser and Tom Hateley’s free-kick later deflected in off Jonny Hayes to hand Motherwell an ill-deserved victory. But Gillet revealed the players were determined to make sure they enjoy a better feeling following their clash with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park today.

“We just need to keep our heads up and keep working,” the full-back said. “We performed well against Motherwell, so we just need to keeping going until the luck is on our side. We don’t want to live that every weekend. When we scored the second goal, everyone must have been thinking ‘that’s it, now we can keep it strong and move forward’. But we lost the game in the last few minutes and that was quite hard to take.”

Gillet feels the influence of manager Terry Butcher and assistant Maurice Malpas will ensure there is no self-pity among the players. “They don’t just want the same, they want more from us,” Gillet said.

Meanwhile, Rory McKeown has targeted more goals this season after revealing fans are desperate for him to repeat his impressive debut strike. The 18-year-old enjoyed a positive start to his Kilmarnock career when he grabbed their only goal to earn a 1-1 draw against Dundee United on the opening day of the SPL. “It was nice to get the goal but every time I meet a fan they are always asking me when I’m going to get another one,” said McKeown. “It would be nice to score some more goals but, first and foremost, I’m a defender.”
