With United 2-0 down to Inverness, Gunning received a short pass by bending down, picking up the ball and then walking from the field of play.

As he made his way down to the tunnel following his substitution he was loudly booed by his own support.

His contract was originally due to expire in the summer, though United have now decided to terminate it two months early.

They would not comment on whether the decision had anything to do with Gunning’s antics this past Saturday.

A statement read: “Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United by mutual consent. This is a private matter and the club will not make any further comment.”
