The Scottish Sun is reporting that the defender wishes to remain until the end of his current deal, which expires in six weeks time. This is despite United releasing a statement on the club’s official website stating that the defender had already been released.

It is expected he’ll take his case to the Scottish player’s union.

The “release” took place three days after a bizarre incident during Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Inverness CT. During live play, Gunning picked up the ball and walked from the field of play. He was then instructed by manager Mixu Paatelainen to return to the field where he sat down to receive treatment as United got a substitute prepared. He was then incessantly booed by own support as he left the field.
