Garry O’Connor set to sign for Selkirk

O’Connor - who has been without a club since a spell at Morton - will attend the Borderers’ match with the Hibs Under-20 side at Yarrow Park this evening.

However, he is not expected to play any part in the pre-season friendly.

The ex-Scotland striker, who has had spells with Birmingham City, Barnsley, Lokomotiv Moscow and Tom Tomsk, was blasted by Morton chairman Douglas Rae in April, who branded the forward ‘hopeless and unfit’.

Rae said: “Have I been disappointed with Garry? Yes, he has been hopeless.

“My view is he has been totally unsatisfactory. He has not been able to get himself back mobile enough to play in the Championship.”

“Garry is only 30 and he has just left himself go. In the time he’s been here he should have been able to get himself back to a level of fitness that, in my view, he doesn’t have.

“He’s been disappointing, he really has. I think he has lost interest in football and if I had been the manager I would have dropped him before he actually was.”

O’Connor said in an interview with the Scotland on Sunday in January that he felt he had ‘a good three or four years’ in him, adding that he needed to be fitter but was confident of scoring goals.
