Former Hibs and Celtic striker Derek Riordan signs for York

Jackie McNamara’s side currently prop up the other 91 clubs in the English Football League, three points adrift in bottom place in League 2.

Riordan has joined until the end of the season and could make his debut on Saturday when the Minstermen host Stevenage.

“I’m delighted to have signed and just to be back playing football games, it’s brilliant,” Riordan said. “I’m going to take each game as it comes now and hopefully score a few goals too.

“A couple of weeks ago the gaffer phoned me asking if I wanted to come down for a few week on trial and I came straight away, so I’ve been training for the last couple of weeks and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“It’s been good, I’ve got on really well with all the lads and obviously with the coaching staff too so it’s been enjoyable and it’s even better when you get a contract at the end of it.”

Capped three times by Scotland, Riordan was training with Hibs earlier in the season. He will now focus his attention on preserving York’s league status.

He told the club’s website: “I just want to do well and help put the team a bit further up the table to obviously get us out of the relegation battle that we’re in. I hope to bring goals to the table but also provide assists as well.

“I think I’m a bit of a playmaker; I like to be on free kicks and corners and to create chances, but obviously score too.”

Riordan scored over 100 goals for Hibs during two spells at Easter Road. Inbetween he played for Celtic and was part of their double-winning squad in 2006-07 but struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular.

He played in China for a while and also had short spells at St Johnstone, Alloa Athletic and East Fife.
