Foreign football: Ten-man Twente thrill McClaren with PSV rout

Steve McClaren’s FC Twente signalled their Dutch title credentials by running out resounding 6-2 winners away to PSV Eindhoven.

Not even the sending off of Douglas after 51 minutes could halt the former England manager’s rampant side. In what is one of the most competitive title races in Europe this season Twente are second in the table, level on 48 points with PSV and one behind AZ Alkmaar, but with a game in hand, while Ajax, Feyenoord and Heerenveen are all within five points of top spot.

In Italy, Lazio beat ten-man Roma 2-1 in a heated Serie A derby match to do the double over their city rivals for the first time in 15 years and claim advantage in the race for third place. Lazio are now third, two points above Udinese, who were held to a 0-0 draw against Atalanta and five above Napoli after Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani scored yet again in a 2-1 victory at Parma. In Spain, ten-man Barcelona overcame the dismissal of Gerard Pique to beat Sporting Gijon 3-1 at Camp Nou on Saturday night.
