Football briefs: Wednesday move quickly to land Dave Jones as boss

Sheffield Wednesday have appointed Dave Jones as their new manager.The npower League One promotion-chasers moved for the former Cardiff City manager after sacking Gary Megson on Wednesday night.

Jones, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, said: “This is a fantastic football club and a fantastic challenge for me. Promotion is the first ambition and from there is to try and get to the Holy Grail, which is the Premiership.

“After talking to the chairman and seeing what he wanted and what his plans are, I had no hesitation in choosing here because it is a huge club that should not be where it is now.”

Birmingham and Coventry hit by transfer freeze

Championship clubs Birmingham and Coventry have been banned from the transfer market for failing to submit their financial accounts on time to the Football League.

The former top-flight pair missed a 1 March deadline to file reports with the Football League. Birmingham, who was relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, blamed yesterday’s decision on delayed auditing following the arrest on money laundering charges of owner Carson Yeung. Coventry said they are waiting for their owner to approve their budget.

Fifa fear Brazil toiling to host 2014 World Cup

Serious concerns about Brazil’s preparations for the 2014 World Cup have been expressed by Fifa.

Fifa’s secretary general Jerome Valcke admitted travelling fans could face major transport and accommodation problems, and said “not a lot is moving” in Brazil and that organisers need a “kick up the arse”.

“The concern is nothing is made or prepared to receive so many people because the world wants to go to Brazil,” said Valcke. “I am sorry to say but things are not working in Brazil.”
