Football in Brief: Sion mount legal move against Fifa

FC SION say they have filed a criminal complaint against members of Fifa’s executive committee over its threat to suspend Switzerland from world football.

Sion claim the threat made on 17 December by Fifa amounts to unacceptable blackmail and a breach of legal rules. Fifa said it wanted the Swiss FA to discipline Sion within one month over a long-running legal battle against their expulsion from the Europa League.

Dutch cup hooligan sentenced to jail

A DUTCH court yesterday sentenced the hooligan who attacked AZ Alkmaar’s goalkeeper during a cup match against Ajax to a four-month prison term. The 19-year-old, identified under Dutch privacy laws only as Wesley van W, ran onto the Amsterdam Arena pitch on 21 December and tried to attack Esteban Alvarado, who parried the attack before twice kicking his assailant as he lay on the turf.

Diego Maradona hit with fine by UAE FA

Diego Maradona was fined 9,000 dirham (£1,500) yesterday by the United Arab Emirates FA for verbally abusing a rival coach. Maradona, who coaches UAE club Al Wasl, has been feuding with Al Ain coach Cosmin Olaroiu since losing a match last month. The Argentina legend complained that Olaroiu and his staff celebrated the winning goal in an unprofessional manner.

PSG are poised to appoint Carlo Ancelotti

Paris Saint-Germain have called a news conference for today amid reports that Carlo Ancelotti will be introduced as the club’s new coach.

Although PSG has yet to confirm whether the Italian will replace Antoine Kombouare, the former Chelsea, AC Milan and Juventus manager has been spotted with the French club’s sporting director Leonardo this week at Parc des Princes.

Antonio Cassano admits Euro 2012 fear

Italy striker Antonio Cassano has confirmed he is a major doubt for Euro 2012, saying he needs six months to return to action after undergoing emergency heart surgery in November. Azzurri coach Cesare Prandelli has said he hoped the 29-year-old AC Milan forward, a key member of the national side, will be fit for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine in which Italy’s first game is in Group C against holders Spain on 10 June.
