First Division: Four-goal Dunfermline rain on Cowdenbeath’s flag day

Dunfermline upset neighbours
Cowdenbeath on the day the Blue Brazil received their title flag for last season’s efforts in Division Two by winning 4-0 at Central Park, with Ryan Thomson grabbing a double.

Cowdenbeath had held their own until seconds before half-time when Thomson challenged goalkeeper Thomas Flynn and Andy Barrowman netted the loose ball.

A Pars win was definitely on the cards when Thomson nodded in an Alex Whittle corner four minutes after the break, with the 21-year-old then firing home the third on 79 minutes.

Josh Falkingham put the icing on the cake with a fine 30-yard strike, much to the delight of manager Jim Jefferies. “It is a great result for us and we took our chances in quite a clinical manner. Overall though we can play better than that.”

Disappointed Cowdenbeath manager Colin Cameron said: “We were doing okay and then a mistake cost us right on half-time and their second goal knocked the wind right out of us.”

Partick Thistle showed their title credentials as they defeated Falkirk 3-1 at Firhill with a lightning start paving the way for their success. Steven Lawless drove in the opener in five minutes and Kris Doolan made it two just two minutes later when he netted from close in.

Falkirk looked on for a comeback when Lyle Taylor scored on 53 minutes, however the Firhill side quickly put paid to that when Doolan restored their two-goal lead four minutes later.

Jay Fulton hit the bar, Stuart Bannigan cleared off the line and Scott Fox saved to deny Blair Alston as the Jags held out for victory.

Meanwhile, Airdrie saw off
Dumbarton 4-1 with striker John Boyle netting a first-half hat-trick. Dumbarton’s Jim Lister pulled a goal back in the second half before Paul di Giacomo scored to seal the Diamonds’ win.

Raith Rovers defeated Hamilton 2-0 at Stark’s Park with Brian Graham scoring twice, including a second-half penalty.

The meeting between potential promotion candidates Morton and
Livingston ended 2-2 at Cappielow. Morton went in front through Peter Weatherson, only for former Greenock man Iain Russell to level and Stefan Scougall to put the Lions in front. Tony
Wallace then scored for the third game in a row to get Morton a point, converting a Scott Taggart corner with 11 minutes left to play.
