FIFA probe Mauricio Pinilla bust-up claims

FIFA chiefs have launched a probe after Chile striker Mauricio Pinilla was reportedly punched by Brazil’s communications boss during half-time at Saturday’s match.

Rodrigo Paiva said he had shoved the ex-Hearts striker, but claimed he did so in self-defence.

A FIFA spokesperson told reporters in Rio de Janeiro: “We can confirm there has been an incident and the disciplinary committee is currently analysing the matter.”

A scuffle broke out after Brazilian striker Fred slapped Chile’s Gary Medel on the back of the head after Luis Felipe Scolari’s team had beaten their fellow South Americans 3-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

Media reports said that Paiva and Chile No 2 Sebastian Beccacece were caught up in a heated clash that culminated in the Brazil official punching Pinilla.

Paiva added: “It was not just me. Pinilla came towards me and I just defended myself. I reacted by pushing him.”

FIFA officials reportedly have access to video footage of the incident following the last 16 clash.

Pinilla, who came on as a second-half substitute, nearly won the match for Chile, hitting the bar in the dying seconds, but was one of three Chileans to miss penalties in the dramatic penalty shootout.
