Huddersfield net Falkirk duo Wallace and Higginbotham

In-demand Falkirk defender Murray Wallace yesterday joined Huddersfield Town in a lucrative move that could earn the Bairns as much as £750,000.

The 19-year-old also held talks with Championship pair Ipswich Town and Brighton but instead opted for Lee Clark’s League One promotion hopefuls in an initial £300,000 switch that is expected to rise with a series of add-ons.

The former Rangers trainee has burst to prominence impressively this season after only making his first-team debut back in August and will see out the current campaign with Falkirk after the club agreed a loan-back clause with all the clubs interested in his signature.

And Bairns manager Steven Pressley is convinced the highly-rated teenager, who was contracted to Falkirk until 2014, has a bright future ahead of him after carefully considering the next step in his career.

Pressley said: “The great thing for Murray is that he had three terrific clubs to choose from.

“He met all the clubs and was impressed greatly by all the clubs, but he just felt that Huddersfield was the right choice for him.

“It was a really difficult decision for him to make but it was based on what he believed was right for him as a footballer, progressing. I just wanted him to be comfortable with his own decision and, after speaking to him, he is very, very satisfied and really excited by it.

“One of the reasons he has gone there is they see him as an integral part of their squad for next season.

“The great thing is that he has got a six-month transitional period, where he can visit Huddersfield on a number of occasions between now and the summer and he can find himself the right living accommodation.

“So, I think the transition will be quite a smooth one for him.”

Wallace will be joined at Huddersfield by Kallum Higginbotham after Falkirk accepted a ‘six-figure’ bid for the striker who won the man of the match award at Hampden on Sunday.

Higginbotham, 22, has enjoyed an impressive season for the Bairns and, after striking up a prolific partnership with top scorer Farid El Alagui, has played a huge part in the success of Pressley’s young side.

However, his eye-catching display in the 3-1 defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Communities League Cup semi-final at the weekend appears to have had an immediate drawback after Huddersfield swooped almost instantly to capture the Englishman.

The former Rochdale youngster’s contract was due to expire in the summer and the cash-strapped First Division outfit could not turn down Town’s second offer of the day.

They did, however, reject a move from Championship promotion hopefuls Blackpool for midfield play-maker Mark Millar.

The 23-year-old former Celtic player is also out of contract at the end of the season and has already been linked with interest from Swansea City, Aston Villa and Dundee United.

A Falkirk spokesman last night said: “The offer came nowhere near our valuation of the player and, for this reason, Blackpool’s bid has been turned down.”
