FA Cup roundup: Martin O’Neill’s joy as Black Cats pounce to end Arsenal’s hopes of a trophy

SUNDERLAND condemned Arsenal to their seventh season without a trophy after easing through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Kieran Richardson, pictured right, opened the scoring with an arrowed volley on 40 minutes, the second coming from an own-goal from the unfortunate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, more than compensation for the Black Cats’ first home defeat under Martin O’Neill last weekend.

Two goals in the opening six minutes proved enough for Everton to get past Blackpool at Goodison Park and book their place in the quarter-finals. Royston Drenthe fired Everton ahead in the first minute after being teed up by Marouane Fellaini and Denis Stracqualursi struck to double the lead five minutes later. Blackpool’s Kevin Phillips skied a penalty over in stoppage time.

Striker David Nugent slotted home the winner to take Leicester into the quarter-finals in a stirring encounter with Norwich at Carrow Road. Sean St Ledger put Leicester in front but Norwich captain Wes Hoolahan equalised after 22 minutes when he stabbed home the rebound after Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel had saved his spot kick. Leicester then went ahead after 70 minutes through Nugent.

On-loan Arsenal teenager Ryo Miyaichi starred as Bolton beat Millwall 2-0. The 19-year-old winger opened the scoring before David Ngog wrapped up a simple win.
