FA Cup roundup: Drinks all round as Paolo Di Canio tells Swindon players to celebrate

PAOLO DI CANIO ordered his Swindon players to go out for a drink and celebrate after their 4-1 FA Cup win over Huddersfield.

The controversial ex-Celtic midfielder saw his side come back from a goal down to thrash the Yorkshire outfit to reach the second round. He said: “My players were fantastic. They can now drink a little bit more than usual to celebrate this victory. This is our best win of the season. It was an amazing display. We worked so hard and showed maturity against the best team in Division One. We went a goal behind, but kept going and refused to roll over. I have wonderful players who showed passion and desire to get back into the game and turn things around.”

Former Celtic player Simon Ferry was involved in his team’s first three goals, while chipping in the fourth three minutes from time. Huddersfield manager Lee Clark, who was without Jordan Rhodes, said: “We were absolute garbage.”

In yesterday’s ties, Danny Lowe was sent off for FC Halifax Town as three goals in the last ten minutes saw them crash to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of npower League One leaders Charlton in the FA Cup first round. Centre-back Lowe saw red for a nasty foul on Scott Wagstaff with six minutes left as a spirited display by the non-league side ended in misery.

Matthew Taylor headed Charlton in front in the 40th minute and a late flurry made it emphatic, with Johnnie Jackson getting the second with ten minutes to go before further strikes from Danny Hollands and Bradley Pritchard. Charlton face Carlisle United in the second round.

Morecambe saw an 89th-minute header from Gary McDonald ruled out for offside as Sheffield Wednesday progressed with a 2-1 win on the Lancashire coast. The Shrimps thought they had erased a 2-0 deficit when McDonald nodded home the rebound from Phil Jevons’ saved shot, but an assistant’s flag denied them.

Chris Lines had fired Wednesday in front in the 18th minute and Chris O’Grady headed in a second seven minutes into the second half, but a controversial penalty – given for a handball by Lines – allowed Laurence Wilson to get the hosts back in it just after the hour mark. Wednesday will now await the replay between Maidenhead and Aldershot, who drew 1-1 yesterday, to see who they play in the second round.
