CRAIG GORDON: A surprise replacement for David Marshall, the Celtic keeper had no chance for England’s goals and was too often exposed by his defence. 6

IKECHI ANYA: Playing in an unfamiliar right-back position, Anya stuck in but was caught up the pitch and out of position at times. 5

GRANT HANLEY: The big stopper had a great chance in front of the England goal in the first half but headed over the bar. Cannot be overlooked that the home side scored with three headers. 5

CHRISTOPHE BERRA: Like several of his team mates, Berra was brought in from the cold and the Ipswich defender was posted missing at the England goals. 6

LEE WALLACE: The Rangers captain was playing due to injuries to Kieran Tierney and Andrew Robertson. He blew hot and cold on a difficult night for the Scots. 5

SCOTT BROWN: Returned from a short retirement from international football. The Celtic captain was all over the Wembley pitch trying to cajole his team mates but ultimately to no avail. 7

DARREN FLETCHER: Retained the captaincy despite Brown’s decision to reverse his retirement. Could not really dictate the tempo from the middle of the park in a meaningful way. 6

JAMES FORREST: Playing on the left wing, the Celtic player struggled to create. Missed a good chance early in the second-half when he failed to hit the target from 12 yards. 5

JAMES MORRISON: Scored for Scotland when they lost 3-2 in a friendly on their last visit to Wembley but failed to shine although he at least he tested Joe Hart with a shot. Replaced by James McArthur in 66 minutes. 5

ROBERT SNODGRASS: Regarded as one of the best Scotland players in the group, the Hull forward delivered several good balls from set pieces and worked hard to pull white shirts out of position. 7

LEIGH GRIFFITHS: There had been a clamour for Griffiths to get his first start. He fed off scraps and became an isolated figure at times but should have played in Snodgrass in the first half when England were stretched. 6

SUBSTITUTES

James McArthur: Came on for James Morrison when the game was effectively over. 5

Callum Paterson: Replaced Anya late in the game when Scotland were hanging on. 5

Matt Ritchie: Introduced with eight minutes remaining but by then all was lost for the visitors. 5
