East of Scotland: Welfare win to go second

Whitehill Welfare enhanced their championship ambitions in the Central Taxis Premier Division, beating Edinburgh City 2-0.

They are now in second place, six points behind leaders Spartans but with three games in hand and the two clubs have still to face each other.

After a goal-less first half Scott McCulloch headed Whitehill in front then Wayne McIntosh sealed all three points with a penalty five minutes from time.

Preston Athletic recorded a memorable win with a 1-0 victory at home to current title holders Stirling University, thanks to a strike from Conor Scott early in the second half.

Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale moved into mid-table with a 2-0 win over relegation threatened Edinburgh University thanks to goals from Alberto Arena and Ritchie Wilkes.

Vale of Leithen eased their relegation worries with a 4-0 win over Civil Service Strollers and Gretna 2008 moved into the top half of the table with a 2-0 victory against the students of Heriot-Watt University.
