East of Scotland League roundup: Students progress in cup with narrow win

Stirling University secured their place in the quarter-finals of the SFA South Region Challenge Cup with a narrow 1-0 win against Whitehill Welfare.

The only goal of the game came five minutes from the end, scored by leading scorer Chris Geddes. Joining Stirling will be Duns, who upset the form book to beat visitors Edinburgh City 2-0. In the Central Taxis Premier Division, Gretna 2008 kept the pressure on leaders Spartans with a 4-2 victory against Civil Service Strollers. Meanwhile, Tynecastle maintained their winning form under new manager Tom Steven with a 4-2 away win against Leith Athletic while Lothian Thistle defeated Edinburgh University 2-0. In the First Division, Preston Athletic stayed on top with a 2-1 win against Kelso United while Heriot Watt University beat Hawick Royal Albert 4-1 and Coldstream overcame Ormiston 4-0. Easthouses Lily and Berwick Rangers Reserves shared the points in a 3-3 draw.
