Dundee 0 - 1 Ross County: Strong start in top flight no shock to County captain Brittain

Ross County skipper Richard Brittain is not surprised by his side’s impressive start to their Clydesdale Bank Premier League campaign.

The 28-year-old fired home from the penalty spot to earn his side their first win of the season against Dundee on Saturday and extend their unbeaten league run to a staggering 38 matches.

The 1-0 victory moved the SPL new boys to within a point of Celtic and Hibernian. Brittain said: “I’m not surprised by how well we have started as I think 95 per cent of our players have played in the league before, so we know what it takes to stay in the SPL.

“If you look at our back four of Ross Tokely, Grant Munro, Scott Boyd and Marc Fitzpatrick, I think they have close to 600 appearances in the Premier League. We are an experienced enough team and that experience will help us through the season.”

Brittain was delighted to be the player who netted the goal that gave the Dingwall men a historic first SPL win. After going close with a long-range free-kick moments earlier, he clinically fired the ball home from the penalty spot on 72 minutes after Mark Corcoran had been brought down in the area by Neil McGregor.

“I’m delighted that we have managed to get that first win of the season. It can become a bit of a monkey on the back the longer the season goes on,” said Brittain. “Dundee is a difficult place to come as they are a good side and the fans get right behind them. We worked hard and were fortunate enough to get the result.”

The midfielder said his team-mates are refusing to pay much attention to their long, unbeaten run, instead opting to concentrate on one game at a time. He added: “It’s just a number to us and it doesn’t mean anything. It is a great achievement, but we take no notice of it and let other people speak about it. We will continue to work hard and get focused on next week.”

Dundee had been looking to pick themselves up following last weekend’s derby defeat by Dundee United, and defender Neil McGregor admitted that adjusting to life in the SPL has been a steep learning curve for his team.

He said: “It’s a very sore one as we thought we played quite well. We just haven’t scored. We aren’t taking our chances and in the end we have lost to a very soft penalty.

“That’s the big bad Premier League and we have to wise up quick.”

The defender knows his team need to start cutting out the mistakes at both ends of the pitch.

He added: “You might say we are not getting the breaks at the moment, but we are also not taking our chances when they come our way.

“We’re also not being strong enough at the back as we are giving away too many chances.

“We have brought in another couple of players over the past week so there will be more competition for places and that can only be a good thing.”
