Scottish bookmakers McBookie had cut Thompson, who made 48 appearances for Liverpool between 1996 and 2000, to 4/1 second favourite this morning behind Terry Butcher, but the 37-year-old has now been priced at 1/2 following a number of bets.

Alloa boss Barry Smith is still in the running in third at 6/1 along with caretaker boss Gary Teale while Steven Thompson is next on the list at 12/1.

Paul Petrie, spokesman for McBookie.com said: “ When the request came in we assumed they meant Steven Thompson so didn’t expect to see much interest but it was definitely David they were after.

“This would be a very strange appointment and it could be nothing more than Chinese Whispers but we will be watching with interest.”

BBC Radio Scotland commentator Chic Young is a rank outsider at 7500/1.
