Cup final countdown: Capital heroes No 19 Bobby Johnstone

Born in Selkirk, the man known as “Nicker” signed for Hibs in 1946, three years before he became the last member of the Famous Five to make his first-team debut.

Johnstone was reckoned to be the brains behind the immortal forward line, his efforts for the Easter Road club earning him the first of 17 Scotland caps in 1951.

In 1955, he moved south to Manchester City, where he earned a place in the record books by becoming the first player to score in back-to-back FA Cup finals in 1955 and 1956.

A second spell back at Hibs started in 1959 and Johnstone’s renowned skill on the ball played a big part in helping Joe Baker hit his record 42 goals in one season.

In total, he played 219 games for Hibs, scoring 116 goals. He left for a second time in 1961, joining Oldham, where he considerably boosted the attendances straight away at Boundary Park.
