Crosbie header the start to Spartans’ winning revival

Spartans women’s side got back to winning ways following a faltering start to their league campaign when they claimed full points at the expense of Capital rivals Hutchison Vale.

A last-minute switch of venue to Ainslie Park did little to help the preparation of either side but Spartans were able to draw first blood thanks to a first-half Claire Crosbie headed goal.

After the break, Sarah Ewens extended their lead and then a Diana Barry penalty appeared to seal the victory for Debbi McCulloch’s side.

Hutchison Vale attempted a fight-back and did reduce the deficit when Michelle Russell netted her fifth goal of the campaign, but Spartans held on to take maximum points.

“I felt we played some good football at times,” commented Spartans coach McCulloch.

“The team battled throughout and I was pleased with the chances we created in what was a very difficult fixture.

“Rachel Harrison pulled off some fantastic saves towards the end of the match as Vale threw everything they could at us and she really kept us in it. Overall, though, I am happy with the win.”

Vale coach Ian McDonald added: “It’s always disappointing to get beaten but I can’t fault the girls because their performance was fantastic.”

Elsewhere, Hibs Ladies’ title ambitions received a significant set-back when they were thrashed 5-1 by defending champions Glasgow City.

Lisa Evans (2), Leanne Crichton, Christie Murray and Emma Mitchell were all on target for the Glasgow girls with Claire Emslie netting Hibs’ consolation.

“The result was a sore one to take,” commented Hibs boss Willie Kirk. “In the second-half the girls accepted defeat too easily and we never got going.”
