Craig Brewster holds fort as Steve Evans leaves Crawley

CRAIG Brewster, the former Dundee United and Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager, has been named the caretaker manager of npower League Two side Crawley Town.

Crawley manager Steve Evans has left his role to take over at league rivals Rotherham, and the Sussex club immediately put Brewster in temporary charge until the end of the season.

Brewster, who had spells at Dundee United, Hibs, Dunfermline Athletic, Aberdeen and Inverness during a distinguished playing career which also included a lengthy and successful spell in Greek football, has had two spells as manager at Caley Thistle and also had a short and unsuccessful spell in the dugout at Tannadice. He joined Crawley in June 2011 as a development coach.

Crawley confirmed yesterday morning that Evans, 49, has opted to join the Millers, who are six places and 14 points behind fourth-placed Town. Evans, who took assistant Paul Raynor with him, had managed Crawley since 2007 and led them to the Blue Square Bet Premier title last season.

They topped League Two for much of this term but slipped out of the automatic promotion places after selling top scorers Matt Tubbs and Tyrone Barnett.

The club also face an FA charge after a brawl at Bradford a fortnight ago. Brewster was thrown in at the deep end with a busy Easter Monday card in England yesterday, but the Dundonian started with a 2-1 win as Crawley came from behind to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive at Barnet.

Ricky Holmes put the hosts ahead early on but second-half goals from John Dempster and Scott Davies sealed the win for Crawley who also had Sergio Torres dismissed in injury time.
