Cowdenbeath 2 - 3 Dumbarton: Dumbarton stay in SFL1

A DECISIVE three-goal burst just before the interval proved to be enough for Dumbarton to confirm their First Division survival as they completed the remarkable turnaround in their fortunes since Ian Murray took over the managerial reins last November with the club seemingly destined for the drop.

Scorers: Cowdenbeath - Moore 15, Miller 88; Dumbarton - Agnew 35, 44 pen, Lister 39

“I’m ecstatic we’ve managed to secure our status,” grinned Murray afterwards. “We had five points when I started – we’ve now got 42. It’s an incredible achievement.”

The visitors opened the game in brisk fashion but were stunned when Craig Moore broke forward and beat the offside trap to slide the ball under the advancing Stephen Grindlay to give Cowdenbeath an early lead. The same player then missed a good opportunity to double their advantage as he sent an angled drive just wide.

The Sons then demonstrated the resilience that has launched their amazing climb up the table as they came storming back.

Scott Agnew started the fightback with a stunning 40-yard chip after he spotted Cowden goalkeeper Thomas Flynn was off his line and his sublime effort dropped into the back of the net.

Minutes later, Jim Lister headed the visitors into the lead from close range and then on the brink of the interval Agnew grabbed his second from the penalty spot after Steven McDougall had been hauled to the ground.

The second half saw the resurgent visitors continue to hold the upper hand and they made chance after chance without being able to rediscover their finishing touch.

Cowden did grab a late consolation through Kyle Miller but their battle with near neighbours Dunfermline to avoid the relegation play-off place will go on to the final game of the season.
