Cowdenbeath 0 - 1 Dumbarton: Sons record first league win of season

Dumbarton boosted the chances of caretaker manager Jack Ross being granted a permanent role as they recorded their first league win of the season, writes Iain Collin at Central Park.

Since promotion last May, these two teams have enjoyed differing fortunes. Mid-table Cowdenbeath have shown an ability to settle into First Division life more seamlessly, while for the visitors, two draws betrayed a poor start to the campaign.

However, with Ross again in the dugout following last month’s sacking of Alan Adamson, the Sons finally savoured victory.

Ross said: “It’s fantastic for the players. Their desire has never been in doubt but they have been on the receiving end of some unfortunate criticism. I’m delighted they got their just rewards. It’s been getting closer and closer and today showed what they are capable of.”

Midfielder Mark Gilhaney was the hero, spearing a low shot past home keeper Thomas Flynn from 16 yards just as Steven McDougall’s cutback looked to have evaded his supporting team-mates.

The visitors could have made it a more comfortable afternoon had Bryan Prunty not struck Flynn’s legs with his 66th minute penalty.

Dumbarton keeper Jamie Ewings saved from Lewis Coult and twice from Jamie Stevenson free-kicks, the second a magnificent fingertip touch, to help seal the three points.

Cowdenbeath manager Colin Cameron commented: “We got what we deserved. Dumbarton are fighting for their lives and they wanted it more than us..”
