Coventry put woes aside to win

Coventry ended a traumatic week in the history of the club by winning against npower League One leaders Doncaster at the Ricoh Arena yesterday.

Deducted ten points on Thursday after entering administration, Steven Pressley’s side managed to put off-field distractions behind them as a first-half Cyrus Christie strike secured three points with a 1-0 win over Rovers.

Barry Robson impressed for Sheffield United as the Blades moved to within two points of the automatic promotion places courtesy of a vital 1-0 away win against Tranmere. With both sides hoping to close the gap to the sides above them, it was an unfortunate own goal by Tranmere’s Ash Taylor that was the difference, with Ronnie Moore’s side dropping to sixth in the table.

John Hughes’ Hartlepool continue to struggle in their fight for League One survival as their ten men lost 2-0 at home to MK Dons.

Two penalties from former Hearts and Aberdeen forward Lee Miller earned Carlisle a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury.

In the Championship, Scotland striker Jordan Rhodes rescued a point for managerless Blackburn, who extended their winless run to nine matches against neighbours Blackpool.

Michael Appleton – who led the Seasiders to a 2-0 victory over Rovers in December before taking up the reins at Ewood Park a month later – was sacked last week to leave Gary Bowyer in caretaker charge, as he was following Henning Berg’s similarly brief tenure earlier in the campaign. Such chaos behind the scenes under controversial owners Venky’s has been reflected by dismal performances on the field and on-loan MK Dons centre-back Gary MacKenzie gave Blackpool a 64th minute lead as Rovers once again failed to convince.

They looked set to rue earlier missed chances by David Jones and Josh King but Rhodes secured a share of the spoils with his 24th npower Championship goal of the season.
