Clyde owners agree on move to East Kilbride

Third Division Clyde have cleared a huge hurdle in their desire to relocate their club away from their Cumbernauld home of two decades to East Kilbride and also have the club renamed as EK Clyde.

Nearly 300 of the individual owners of the club under their Community Interest Company status held an extraordinary general meeting ahead of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Montrose and agreed to pass the three resolutions put forward by the Broadwood board.

Resolution one, which was to authorise the board to enter into legal agreements and make appropriate arrangements to allow relocation in or around East Kilbride, was passed with a 93 per cent ‘yes’ vote.

The second resolution – to change the name to EK Clyde Football Club Community Interest Company on the result of a move – was also passed, with slightly less backing of 84 per cent, and the third resolution setting out the rules for any further name change was accepted with 85 per cent positive backing.

A club spokesperson said: “The board are delighted by the outcome of the vote as they are convinced that relocating to East Kilbride and working with the East Kilbride Community Trust is an excellent opportunity for the club.

“We fully recognise the trust placed in the board by the ownership to deliver the necessary partnership agreement in order for these proposals to become a reality and we will not take this responsibility lightly.”

A general meeting for all supporters to discuss the next steps for Clyde will be called in the near future which should firm up an exact site to be chosen in East Kilbride and an application to be made for planning permission.
