Changing room chat: Brighton inspire own goal rush online

BRIGHTON’S hat-trick of own goals against Liverpool led to a few online polls springing up, inviting readers to submit their favourite OGs of yesteryear.

Arthur Duncan’s diving header which handed the 1979 Scottish Cup to Rangers is one that springs to mind north of the Border, although luckily for him no footage exists. A quick trawl of Youtube throws up some memorable headers, sclaffs and volleys from other less fortunate Scottish-based players.

Davie Weir can be seen dinking one past his own Falkirk keeper against Motherwell in 1993 and was also the victim of an unfortunate ricochet at Dens as he scored the ‘winner’ for Dundee while playing for Hearts in 1998-1999.

Gus MacPherson scored a screamer as a Dunfermline player at Ayr of all places in the 2002 Scottish Cup, while Regi Blinker’s headed OG at Pittodrie in 1998 is also worth seeing.

Perhaps the pick of the bunch (other than Cha Du Ri’s shocker against Rennes this season) was shot on a camera phone as Bob Harris swerves an effort home Roberto Carlos-style in the Queen of the South v Dunfermline match last year.
